Sample the shizzle from Mr. Gnome
In 1991, Nirvana made the world go round. Almost 11 years later, Mr. Gnome is about to do it again.
Cleveland duo Mr. Gnome holed up at Josh Homme’s Pink Duck Studios and Butch Vig’s Smart Studios to record and mix their masterpiece sophomore album, Heave Yer Skeleton. The soulful, feminine power of vocalist/guitarist Nicole Barille garners comparisons to both Chan Marshall and Karen O, whereas the dynamic drumming and piano playing of Sam Meister add dashes Death From Above 1979 and Blonde Redhead.
This is going to be-if it isn’t already-one of those bands that people say ‘I saw them back when they were nobody, when they were playing tiny clubs and dive bars… it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.’ Such a hipster move, unfortunately, everyone does it. Regardless, on the stage or in the studio, Mr. Gnome is a force to be reckoned with. Their tendency is to play soft against hard and loud against quiet. If it were sex, it’d be ‘fucking.’
“Heave Your Skeleton,”one of the top 10 albums of 2009 follows “Deliver This Creature,” one of the top 10 albums of 2008. Sensing a pattern?
Do yourself a favor and find them both. In the meantime, here’s shizzle that’ll make your noodle wet:
